Bike of the Day #11 - Boo CX mutant

Yes, Boo...as in real bamboo tubes, hand-picked in Vietnam, methodically cured for months on end, bored to variable diameters, and then assembled painstakingly with high-modulus carbon lugs - to full custom geometries and detailed build demands. For under $3000. [caption id="attachment_1065" align="alignnone" width="576" caption="Chris King headset w/ a Pro Stealth Evo carbon front end, ENVE CX fork and TRP CX-9 brakes - schwing"][/caption] The Details: Boo CX cross machine - size 58 - 16.3 lbs Vietnamese-American baby: The brain-child of U.S. pro-racer, Princeton-grad, and all-around super guy, Nick Frey, Boo bicycles are designed for real world race conditions. The Build: King Headset, Dura Ace 7900, TRP CX-9 brakes, Pro Stealth Evo bar/stem, KCNC collar, Yokozuna cables, Prologo Scratch Nack saddle (that Paul stole from me). Built as a Franken-bike CX / Road all-rounder. The Ratings… Ride-quality/Comfort: So damn smooth it blows your mind.  That's bamboo for you. Better than steel, if you can believe it. Front End Stiffness: Adequate, though I've never found a cross fork that I am totally in love with, and that includes the C'Dale Super X tapered monster. BB Stiffness: Old skool. Stiff, but with some feedback, like an old Litespeed or Merlin ti bike...quite choice. Style/Aesthetics: Eco-tech. Does your cx-bike have a top tube that is hand-carved for ease of carrying? I didn't think so. Technology/Weight/Value: It is a steamroller, built to your exact expectations.  In road, cross, commuter, single speed...whatever.  For less than most monocoque bikes that come out of a mould. Winning. Total: Renegade with a conscience. The Good: Totally unique, ride quality that most people will never experience, and support for an awesome young bike builder doing amazing things. The Bad: About 100 grams heavier than an all-carbon frame. That's about it. The Skinny: Stiff, light, smooth...choose all three, and add durable to the mix.
